24 Hours

okay this post basically has nothing at all to do with communication technologies but it might somewhere down the road. i just felt like writing a post as a way to get all my emotions out. i would normally listen to music in order to do that but i have a slight headache at the moment and blaring my music through my iPod speakers would not help right now..........

i have just had alot on my mind lately considering i turn 18 in a few weeks......pretty exciting stuff but planning a party can be stressful....i have the venue sorted and now i have the theme which is costume. it was going to be 80's but costume is broader for everyone. so if you are reading this you will most likely be invited to the shindig that will be my 18th birthday party.......but the one rule is no costume no entry....lol im a details nazi....if i see one little thing wrong then i basically start over...call me a perfectionist but then you havent seen my bedroom or my car for that matter then again what does being a perfectionist have to do with being neat and tidy??

it's only a few days now to the inxs concert. i'm so excited even though i've seen them before and it was only a few months ago but jd fortune is one of my heroes. despite everything and all the critisism he recieved along the way he still made it. he went from living in his car with his dog to being the lead singer of the one of the most successful bands from australia. i agree with the critics when they say that he cant replace michael h but he isnt trying to. he makes the music his own and guess what they even released an album that was pretty damn successful and went gold in some countries. so to all those critics out there who still dont believe that jd can pull this lead singer thing off the *bleep* you.

okay it felt good to get that off my chest. it just really annoys me when people question my choice in music. i dont tell you what to listen to so why should you tell me?? what i listen to isnt necessarily who i am. if i listen to country that mean im a redneck? or bogan? or if i listen to rap does that mean im a wigger? no it doesnt. i listen to music because i love music. i see it as a way to get a message across or to show someones emotions. music plays a big part in my life even though i cant sing or play an instrument. music for me is a way to reflect on my life and things in it. if im in a good mood i'll listen to songs i love over and over again. i usually do that anyway :)

well you've probably given up reading this by now but i just needed to write something to get rid of some of the thoughts running through my head........

i'm going to post a video at the end of this blog. the song is called 24 hours and it is by one of my favorite singers...alexz johson. she stars in the show instant star and i can relate to alot of her music.so until i post the lecture notes and the first half of the other tutorial....peace out and rock on

what you need - tutorial task

well todays tutorial task was involving photoshop. we had to find images and make some sorta of blend. that above image is the first one that made and stay tuned for more as i update this post

and now the next photo.......this is from my formal but i added a photo of sister's hero...star of high school musical ashley tisdale....

i would post the originals now but i dont have time......

i also made a blended image. what i did is i found black and white photos of some actresses from one of my favorite era in history....the golden era of hollywood or as some would like to call it old hollywood. these images were in black and white and tweaked that a little by adding some elements of color to one part of each of the women....this is what i call color noir....click it to view it full size cause it wont fit in ther blog space
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

okay the next part of the tutorial task will be posted tomorrow.....cause it involves me taking photos....

until then

elegantly wasted - lecture notes

alright this post is a bit late but i have been really busy with uni and life in general. planning and 18th birthday party, attending concerts and trying to find inxs tickets for next weekend can lead to a stressful and busy week......but alas i am finally posting my lecture notes from lecture three of new communication technologies.....lecture three was based on the birth of the computer.....so first i'll post my lecture notes then add some research that i found....

CHARLES BABBAGE AND ADA LOVELACE
  • computer had its origins in various adding machines most notably charles babbage's 19th century difference engine which was designed to calculate and print mathamatic tables.
  • later in his career he conceived of the analytical engine; a massive, brass, steam powered, general-purpose mechanical computer.
  • ada lovelace annotated her own translation of an italian article about babbage, sketch of the analytical engine where she first conceived of a machine that would be able to play music, produce graphics and be of

ALAN TURING wrote a number of influential and important papers.

  • computers were first commercially produced by IBM in the 1980's
  • first generation were large and expensive machines for military, government and corporate work
  • in 1965, gordom moore provided 'moore's law' the capacity of microchips, doubles every two years. moore's second law claims because capital costs are rising faster than revenues, financial feasability will limit the rate of technological development.
  • xerox in the 70's a think tank developed concepts of the mouse, pull down menu's and graphical user interface (GUI)
  • apple launched in 1978

so that's all the notes i took from lecture three but i am able to expand from there. it is quite obvious that technology and computers have come along way since the 70's. today we now have portable computers (also known as laptops) and phones that enable us to access the internet. not to mention the creation of iPods, DVD players, digital cameras and other products that are able to be accessed by the computer.

there are also many other uses for the computer such as music. it enables the user to download and play music but a computer can also be used to create music. a musican can hook up and mic and with the right programs create a demo of their own music themselves. this clearly saves on recording stuido fees. computers have also allowed users with an interest in photography to create digital masterpieces. with the creation of photoshop and other image programs, users are able to touchup their photos and create amazing effects that were not possible 50 years ago. the computer also enables film makers to create, edit and post their works.

the computer offers limitless options when it comes to the arts but it also offers those same things for businesses. without the computer many things in our lives would not be possible. this shows that we have come along way since the 70's when computers were only used by government and miliarty. today nearly most western households contain a computer and the internet. this is a big step up from 10 years ago when hardly anyone had a computer or a cell phone. the looks of these objects have also changed as well. they've gone from being big, bulky and not all that good looking to slim, compact and stylish. technology today has become a fashion and if you dont have the latest trend then you arent up to date.

well that's my blog from lecture 3. until next time......

make no mistake...this is the take - tutorial task part 3

Alright it’s finally time to post the third and final part of this week’s tutorial task. It involves library searches and catalogues and databases and a heck of a lot more confusing stuff. Now what it entails in finding resources and articles that will help formulate our essay topic and finding three articles that relate to our first essay topic. Now I haven’t officially decided upon my first essay topic yet but it may likely be something cyberpunk related as that topic seems to interest me the post. But I will probably change my mind between now and when I start to write the essay.

okay so the resource that I found for cyberpunk is

lol I don’t even know if we were meant to copy and past that but they that’s what was on the page.

tbc

it's on - tutorial task part 2

okay so the another part of this week's task is to find mailing lists and what now but for those of you who dont know what a mailing list is i will give you a definition......

A mailing list is a collection of names and addresses used by an individual or an organization to send material to multiple recipients. The term is often extended to include the people subscribed to such a list, so the group of subscribers is referred to as "the mailing list", or simply "the list".

At least two quite different types of mailing lists can be defined: the first one is closer to the literal sense, where a "mailing list" of people is used as a recipient for newsletters, periodicals or advertising. Traditionally this was done through the postal system, but with the rise of e-mail, the electronic mailing list became popular. When similar or identical material is sent out to all subscribers on a mailing-list, it is often referred to as a mailshot or blast. A list for such use can also be referred to as a distribution list.

In legitimate (non-spam) mailing lists, the individual can subscribe or unsubscribe themselves. Mailing lists are often rented or sold. If rented, the renter agrees to use the mailing list for only contractually agreed-upon times. The mailing list owner typically enforces this by "salting" the mailing list with fake addresses and creates new salts for each time the list is rented. Unscrupulous renters may attempt to bypass salts by renting several lists and merging them to find the common, valid addresses. Mailing list brokers exist to help organizations rent their lists. For some organizations, such as specialized niche publications or charitable groups, their lists may be some of their most valuable assets, and mailing list brokers help them maximize the value of their lists.
source-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists

so another part of the task was to find two academic lists and write about them. the first one i found is 'Cybermind' and it is an Internet mailing list devoted to "the philosophy and psychology of cyberspace." It was co-founded by Alan Sondheim and Michael Current in mid-1994 to explore, exemplify and discuss multiple aspects of cyberspace, both from theoretical and experiential perspectives. The list was born in the split of the spoon collective lists from the Thinknet group, over issues of free speech and appropriate philosophical expression. Early membership involved much overlap with the Futureculture List.

List discussion has resulted in books, articles, conferences, more than one academic thesis, a group novel, and a strong ongoing community. Cybermind itself has been the subject of academic research, including a Doctoral dissertation by Jon Marshall at the University of Sydney. Some writings about the List, and by List members, are listed on the Web Site in the References section.
the url for cybermind is http://www.geocities.com/jpmarshall.geo/cybermind/

and the second mailing list i found is named 'FutureCulture'. Future Culture was originally created as a forum for the discussion of the integration of fringe technology and fringe culture; a mix of the digital underground and the new countercultures such as modern primitives, rave culture and post punk technologists. The William Gibson quote "The street finds its own uses for things" was an appropriate guideline for the topics on the list.

The topic of the mailing list, as stated in the accompanying, but rarely updated, Future Culture FAQ is to be a forum for "real-time discussion of cyberculture/new-edge/technoculture" which is a deliberately vague description of its contents. However, as time passed, the topics on the list drifted and the people on the list has, instead, formed a rather tight community discussing everything, including the stated topics, but more often personal and everyday things. At the best of times, one could say that the Future Culture mailing list defines the future culture. At the worst of times, one can say that it's a mailing list of continuous thread drift that is more concerned with retro-computing and idle gossip than with new culture.
the url for futureculture is http://www.futurec.org/

credit to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futureculture and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cybermind for the information regarding these mailing lists.

okay so this part of the task is finished which means i'm halfway done. yay. until the next part
carrisa.

cant bring myself to light this fuse - tutorial task part 1

okay its time for the second ever tutorial task. i'm going to do the final part first because it will take the least time. this part is a scavenger hunt for information not using google. so here are the questions and their answers.......................................... oh btw for this task the search engines i used were www.ask.com and www.yahoo.com

7. Why do all phone numbers in Hollywood films start with '555'?
It began 30 years ago when the use of exchange names as part of the telephone number was still popular in the USA. Dials had letters as well as numbers and the first 3 letters of the exchange name were dialled followed by numbers. An example might be CENtral 78978. You dialled CEN 78978 or, using all numbers, 236 78978. It so happened that 5 on the dial corresponded with J K and L and you can’t make any English place names using any combination of J, K and L as the first 3 letters. So the 555 code was allocated to service levels such as Directory Assistance, Operator, Repair Service, etc. Due to the "low fill" of the 555 code, Hollywood was encouraged to quote 555 numbers in their productions to prevent real subscribers being harassed by members of the public trying out the numbers quoted on the screen. Generic and satirical advertisements and commercials often used 555 numbers. In the early days of exchange names the prefix KLondike-5 was used as this exchange did not exist.

8. What is the cheapest form of travel from Crete to Rhodes?

sophomore slump or comeback of the year - lecture notes

well it’s that time of the week again although not really because i might be posting this a little late but it’s now time for the post of lecture notes. the notes you are about to read were taken from the new communications technology lecture two!!!! and they go a little something like this…………………..

the 20th century saw the development of mass society and an explosion of broadcast media forms (newspapers, cinema, radio and tv) where messages where distrusted from controlled sources to audiences around the world. there are three main forms of studies:
Communication Studies
Media Studies
Cultural Studies

at the same time of these studies, job focused disciplines emerged

we also watched a french new wave cinema film titled ‘La Jetee’. it was shot completely of black and white photographs which i found interesting. the film also contained no dialogue; only narration. upon doing some further research on ‘La Jetee’ i discovered these interesting facts-
~ The stills were taken with a Pentax 24x36 and the motion-picture segment was shot with a 35mm Arriflex
~ In French, "jetée" is derived the feminine past participle of the verb jeter, which means "to throw". Hence, the title has another meaning, as the main character is described as being "thrown" through time. The title is also a near-homophone of "there I was"
~ Terry Gilliam's 1995 Twelve Monkeys, an Americanized remake of La Jetée, helped the introduction of this '60s cult film to a broader audience. In Gilliam's version, however, the plot was changed significantly.

well that is this weeks lecture notes blogs…..until the next blog……..

this aint a scene vid

as you can see from the above video i have figured out how to put videos onto my blog!!! yay me *claps* lol that is probably my favorite music video right now along with the new 30 seconds to mars vid. hmm i dont know what else to blog about at the moment.maybe the fall out boy concert.........

it was freakin awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! pete wentz is amazing live as are the other boys. we were actually pretty close for seating. right behind the mosh and we could see everything. fob played mostly their old stuff and like 4 or 5 songs from infinity. i totally rocked out to dance, dance, sugar we're going down and this aint a scene. i also got a really cool fob t-shirt. i'll post some pics later but they arent really all that good. i need to buy a better camera.

well that's all for now
carrisa.

this aint a scene, it's an arms race - tutorial task

well the weekend is over (and what an awesome weekend it was!! fall out boy concert anyone? but i’ll post another blog about that later) and it’s time for this weeks tutorial task…..dun dun dun well there is actually two parts to the task but i will do the second part first because that will take the longest. the second part of our task today is write a post about how we use new communication technologies to communicate with our family and friends.

one of the answers to that question is that i do use new communication technologies to communicate with my friends and family. i have been using these communication technologies such as msn messenger, myspace, livejournal and many more for awhile now. msn the longest. last year i was one of those people who didn’t want to conform to the myspace trend but i realised it was a good way to get in contact with my friends if they didn’t have credit on their mobiles or if i didn’t have credit. That’s what probably influenced me to create a myspace and plus it’s a really good way to learn about new bands.

i use msn to communicate with my friends and family. most of my family lives out of state or overseas and sometimes msn or email is the best form of communication. it can also be a lot cheaper than a phone call and sometimes writing an email can be more relaxing than talking on the phone. most of the time i am on msn chatting to my friends. these are usually my friends from school and what now but i have a lot of online friends. one i have met in person and she is awesome. we met on a message board and then added each other on msn and just started chatting. we were chatting for like a year before we met up at a concert and we still chat on msn til this day.

i find it really different talking to ‘online’ friends online. you can tell them different things and sometimes i find i have more in common with them. one of my best friends is a girl i’ve never met in person but only talked to online. we met on some site and just started chatting. i think we’ve been friends for like four years now. i’ve never met her in person because she lives in united states and i haven’t been there…..yet. it’s different talking to her than my ‘real’ friends because if i’m having a fight with one of them i can tell her about it and she is able to give me advice.

these communication technologies are a great way to keep in contact or get in contact with someone. they are also great for making new friends or keeping in touch with the old ones. i think i was influenced to use these technologies by my friends and the idea that you can talk to someone without actually having to talk to them. without msn and myspace i wouldn’t be able to talk to some of my family members as often and I wouldn’t be able to talk to some of my friends either as we are all off doing different things. these technologies are a great invention and possibly one of the top ways of communicating.

well there is part two of my task completed………..maybe i should post a song with this blog just to make it a little longer……since i’m still in a fall out boy induced haze here is…

This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race
by Fall Out Boy
I am an arms dealer
Fitting you with weapons in the form of words
And don't really care which side wins
As long as the room keeps singing
That's just the business I'm in, yeah

This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
I'm not a shoulder to cry on
But I digress

I'm a leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate,
Oh so intricate[x2]

I wrote the gospel on giving up(You look pretty sinking)
But the real bombshells have already sunk(Prima donnas of the gutter)
At night we're painting your trash gold while you sleep
Crashing not like hips or cars
No, more like p-p-p-parties

This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This bandwagon's full
Please, catch another

I'm a leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate,
Oh so intricate[x2]

Yeahh…Whoa-ohh

All the boys who the dance floor didn't love
And all the girls whose lips couldn't move fast enough
Sing, until your lungs give out

This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race(Now you)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race(Wear out the groove)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race(Sing out loud)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race(Oh, oh)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamned arms race

I'm a leading man
And the lies
I weave are oh so intricate,
Oh so intricate[x2]

okay until the next blog......

the take over, the breaks over - lecture notes

okay now that the pesky first post is out of the way we can get down to the good stuff which for this entry is................lecture notes from the first new communication technology lecture. i actually found the lecture very interesting. it way definetley my favourite lecture of the first week of uni and i think it will be a very interesting course!!!

okay now this may seem boring to some but to me it was interesting. things we learned in the first lecture included what the assesment will be and it seems fun. but then again why would work be fun?? anyway i may as well start all this info i'm about to feed to you with a definition of what communication is.

communication is any process that transfers. transmits or makes information known to other people.

a book that our professor steve stockwell recommended we read was 'the rhetoric' by the great aristotle. well he didnt really say great but after studying ancient history for five years and using aristotle as a primary source copious amounts of times i think he happens to be great.

and now for a definition of what technology is.......
technology is the scientific study of mechanical arts and their application to the world.

Marshall McLuhan argues that techonolgies are extensions of the human body. The tool is an extension of the hand, the wheel is an extension of the leg and the book is an extension of the eye.

there are also two forms of technology......analog and digital.
analog technology functions by representing variable forces that are continuous in both time and space through dials that allow the relatively imprecise modulation of those forces.

digital technology relies on stroing bits of binary information about forces by turning on and off currents 0f electricity or light in ways that allow for precise modulation of those forces.
and we also learnt about the genealogy of technology which goes a little something like this-
Print
Telegraph
Telephone
Photograph
Radio
Cinema
Televison

and that is all the notes i wrote down from lecture one. but here are some useful links related to the genealogy stuff.

if you want info on cinema or televison go to http://www.imdb.com this site is very useful in helping you look for movies and their stars.
okay if i find some more useful links i will update this entry but until then it is dunzo.
until the next lecutre.....
carrisa.

dont you know who i think i am?

well it's my first blog and i could write about the first lecture in this entry but then who would want to read about that? so this first entry will be dedicated to me!! exciting huh? not really but it will give you a chance to get to know me better and then we'll get onto the fun stuff later............

let's see where should i start? well my name is carrisa and i'm 17 almost 18 in about 1 month and 14 days. so remember that and also remember that i accept cash, cheque, money order andall forms of major credit cards >.<
so that's, that now onto what i like (if you're still reading this post by now)...........................

my favourite book ever is 'to kill a mocking bird' and my favorite characters are probably jem and boo radley. i also like the devil wears prada but that is one of my favourite movies as well and i also like 'the great gatsby'.

my favoruite tv shows include
supernatural
greys anatomy
prison break
smallville
veronica mars
one tree hill
instant star

hmm i like music. basically any genre i will listen to but if i had to pick a favourite it would have to punk, rock and indie. but then again i also like pop and r n b oh and lets not forget country. at the moment my favourite cd is fall out boy- infinity on high. i'm also going to their concert on saturday night....cant wait. other artists i like include
30 Seconds to Mars
The Fray
The Ramones
Alexz Johnson
Justin Timberlake
Christina Aguilera
Katharine McPhee
Eskimo Joe
The Killers
and many more but the list would be to long

and finally a song to end the first EVER blog entry on..........
"Don't You Know Who I Think I Am?" by Fall Out Boy
Oh oh oh ohOh oh oh oh
A penny for your thoughts but a dollar for your insides
Or a fortune for your disaster
I'm just a painter and I'm drawing a blank

We only want to sing you to sleep
In your bedroom speakers, whoa
We need umbrellas on the inside
Get me just right
They say quitters never win
We walk the plank on a sinking ship
There's a world outside of my front door
That gets off on being down

Oh oh oh oh
I could learn to pity fools as I'm the worst of all
And I can't stop feeling sorry for myself
Whoa We only want to sing you to sleep
In your bedroom speakers, whoa
We need umbrellas on the inside
Get us right

They say quitters never win
We walk the plank on a sinking ship
There's a world outside of my front door
That gets off on being down
They say quitters never win
We walk the plank on a sinking ship
There's a world outside of my front door
That gets off on being down

We only want to sing you to sleep
(In your bedroom speakers, whoa whoa)
We only want to sing you to sleep
They say quitters never win
We walk the plank on a sinking ship
There's a world outside of my front door
That gets off on being down

They say quitters never win
We walk the plank, and we walk the plank
There's a world outside of my front door
That gets off on being down
Broken down on memory lane
Alone together, we're alone (Woah)

We're broken down on memory lane
Alone together, we're alone
Oh oh oh oh

okay so now the first entry is done and i'm off
