temporary insanity - lecture notes

well well well it has been a while since my last post......i'm a bad blogger....it's probably because i get bored to easily!!!! it's because of the break so i will try to catch up with this blogging stuff over the next few weeks but this week is a very busy one for me with assignments due, my birthday on thursday and an exam on saturday morning....dun dun dun plus i have two assesments due next week as well. anyways enough of my rant and lets get onto why i am posting today......

i have finally decided upon my essay topic for this class and it is MUSIC AND THE INTERNET. I will most liekly explore the effects that the internet has had on the music industry, music piracy and copyright and also how the internet has help evolved some aspects of the music industry. i figured that i would pick a topic that i actually enjoy and how the internet has affected it and for me that was music. i think i will also touch base on the peer to peer sites and what not but that basically comes under the music piracy section.

upon doing some further research today; i have discovered some useful sites that may help me with the research department of the essay. now i know that wikipedia isnt a reliable source but it provides a good starting point for research and has many useful links.......so below are some articles by wikipedia that i found relevant to my essay:

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_piracy
This article is discussing the methods, justification, penalties and various laws about music piracy and copyright infringement. After studying legal studies for 3 years in high school; the legal side of music and the internet may influence how I write this essay but on the other side my personal interest in music and internet may offer a different influence. It is most likely then that this essay for me wont show a bias opinion.

P2P CONTROVERSY
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer-to-peer#Legal_controversy
This article is discussing the Peer to Peer revolution that is changing the way many of us accquire our music. Programs such as Kazaa,LimeWire and BitTorrent offer music (among other things) to download for free and that my friends is illegal. There is much legal controversy surrouding these programs and their users. Though what many fail to realize is that by using these programs you are putting yourself and your computer at risks. Many users upload viruses and spyware to those files. So while you think you may be downloading the latest Justin Timberlake single you may actually be expsoing your computer to dangerous viruses and spyware.

iTUNES
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes
Something I actually use. There is so music information in this article it is so hard to summarise. One thing that should be noted about iTunes is that it is not illegal to download music from here but you have to pay a small fee. It's generally about $1.99 per single and usually anything less than $20 for an album. With iTunes you can also burn your downloaded songs onto CD's. Plus you are also showing that you support the artist by paying for their music and helping gain a profit. 'Songs purchased from the iTunes Store are copy protected with Apple's FairPlay digital rights management (DRM) system. As of January 09, 2007, over 2 billion have been downloaded since the service first launched on April 28, 2003.[19]' (Wikipedia.Org, 2007).

MYSPACE AND YOUTUBE
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myspace
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YouTube
Two of the most popular sites on the internet today are MySpace and YouTube. Both these sites offer unsigned artists and bands; a way to get their music hear. Artists such as Lily Allen and the Arctic Monkey's owe much of their success to MySpace. These sites are a great way for aspiring musicians to get their music out there. You can download videos from YouTube with the help of outside programs but I'm not to sure about downloading music from MySpace. Then again your could probably download from those handy p2p networks.

well that is all the info I have found today. i'm going to start looking for books, journal articles and news stories now that will help give more depth to the essay and will also provide factual basis for the points i will try to prove/disprove in the essay.

until next time
carrisa.
